10 Hair Breakage Treatment Tips

1. Choose Natural Hair Care Products

Choose hair care products wisely. Many products contain harmful chemicals that can be damaging to your hair. Both sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are common ingredients in many soaps and shampoos, and can be damaging to your scalp and hair.

Many ingredients in natural hair care products, can help encourage healthy hair growth and prevent breakage.

** Try any of our shampoos; they do not contain bad sulphates and they are all natural. Jane Carter Solution Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo, Lilly of the Desert Aloe 80 Daily Shampoo and our beloved Blended Beauty Soy Cream Shampoo and Cush Cosmetics Mango Babassu Shampoo are divine!

To remove any product build-up, Jane Carter Solution Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo and Kinky-Curly Come Clean are excellent!

2. Consider Getting a Trim

Yes I know, you are trying to let your hair grow, and getting a trim sounds counterproductive. However, getting regular trims will help get rid of dry, damaged and split ends which can work their way up the shaft of your hair and causing even more damage.

Make sure to tell your stylist that you are trying to grow your hair out and you do not want more than a 1/2 inch removed. You may want to ask your stylist how often you should trim your hair, as well, given that many external factors will affect how you need a salon trip.

3. Minimize Heat

You should minimize the use of hot irons, blow dryers and even washing your hair with water that is too hot. This can be damaging to your hair. Heat causes dryness and turns hair brittle, which will result in breakage and stunted hair growth.

Whenever possible, always opt for air-drying your locks.

4. Moisturize

Moisturize is an essential park of any hair breakage treatment, and is also necessary for maintaining healthy hair. Try using a leave-in-conditioner with natural ingredients such as Blended Beauty SilkShake, Blended Cutie Curly Cake Shake, Cush Cosmetics Uncoiled , Cush Cosmetics Hydrate Me Leave-in Protein Conditioner, Alba Botanica Leave-in Conditioner. Now, the next crucial step is to make sure that you seal the moisture with either an oil (try Blended Beauty Natural Hair Oil) OR a Hair Butter of your choice (try Blended Beauty Butter Me Up!, Blended Cutie Soft Curls and Swirls, Afroveda Curl Define or Afroveda Hemp Seed Lock, twist and Hold Butter if you are planning to do two strand twists, locks or braids.

You don’t want to use conditioners containing harsh ingredient, and our products contain only natural herbs and vitamins that promote healthy hair growth. Well-moisturized hair is less susceptible to breakage and dryness. Try Aloe 80 Daily Conditioner, Blended Beauty Quenching Conditioner, Cush Cosmetics Uncoiled (this product can also be use as a conditioner) or Jane Carter Solution Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner.

5. Let Your Hair Loose

Hair pulled tight back in to braids, ponytails and buns can also cause hair breakage. Try to minimize the use of hair accessories, rubber bands and hair ties that will cause your hair to split and break. Relax and let your hair loose.

6. Stay Away from Harsh Chemicals

Chemically treated hair can be extremely damaging to your hair and scalp. If you need to relax your hair, seek advice from a professional stylist. They will better advise you as to what is best for your hair type.

7. Avoid Excessive Manipulation.

Too much brushing, combing and washing can further damage your hair. Try to avoid washing your hair every day as this can cause your hair to lose its natural moisture, creating dry and brittle hair.

Once your hair is in place, leave it be.

8. Protect Your Hair

Exposure to sunlight and chlorine or salt water can dry your hair, causing it to weaken and lead to breakage. Follow good summer hair care habits such as wearing a hat or scarf on hot sunny days or a swimming cap to protect your hair from chlorine or saltwater when in the pool or at the beach.

The same holds true during colder months or during winter. Keep your hair moisturized. If your hair tend to be dry, you may want to use a richer moisturizer (on top of your leave-in) such as Blended Beauty Butter Me Up! or Afroveda Curl Define. Do not forget to wear a hat!

9. Use the Proper Brush or Comb

Make sure to use the proper comb or brush for your hair. Use a wide toothed comb after washing it. Be careful not to comb your hair when it is completely wet, as wet hair tends to be more fragile. Use a leave-in-conditioner, such as Blended Beauty SilkShake, Blended Cutie Curly Cake Shake, Cush Cosmetics Uncoiled, Cush Cosmetics Hydrate Me Leave-in Protein Conditioner or Alba Botanica Leave-in Conditioner to make it easier to comb through your hair.

10. Proper Nutrition

The best hair breakage treatment can sometimes just be good nutrition. As with the rest of your body, proper nutrition and vitamins will reflect the health of your hair. If you eat a healthy diet you will grow stronger and healthier inside and out. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, protein and plenty of fluids may help with attaining the luscious locks that you desire.

How to Wash and Condition Natural Hair

Natural hair can be dry and fragile. A difficult combination, especially if you're a busy woman. Treat your wash day like a pampering spa appointment for your hair. Follow these steps and you'll get soft, moisturized hair that's ready for a variety of styles.

Key Tips:

- Start by rinsing your hair with lukewarm water for about 3 minutes.

- Comb your hair out from ends to roots before you rinse out the conditioner.

- Always apply a leave-in conditioner (such as Blended Beauty SilkShake, Blended Cutie Curly Cake Shake, Cush Cosmetics Uncoiled , Cush Cosmetics Hydrate Me Leave-in Protein Conditioner, Alba Botanica Leave-in Conditioner.) before you proceed with styling.

Step 2: Apply approximately 1 tablespoons of your Pre-Shampoo Oil Treatment throughout each section. Make sure to put oil on every layer of your hair - you will use 4 to 6 tablespoons. Step 4: Leave the oil on your hair for 1 hour or more.

Wash

Step 1: Detangle your oil-soaked hair with your fingers. Gently pull apart tangles and knots so that your hair will be easier to wash.

Step 2: Once in the shower, rinse your hair with lukewarm water for 3-5 minutes. This long rinse will loosen up and rinse away product build up from the week.

Step 3: Apply a nickel to quarter-sized amount of a gentle, conditioning to your scalp and hair. Pass your hair back under the water to create a good lather. Try Blended Beauty Soy Cream Shampoo, Blended Beauty Silky Swirls Shampoo or Cush Cosmetics Mango Babassu Shampoo Bar.

Step 4:
Gently rub your scalp with the shampoo lather.

Step 5: Gently and quickly, work shampoo through the length of your hair - don't separate the hair into sections or try to detangle it.

Step 6: Rinse thoroughly.

Step 1: Apply a generous amount of a thick, rich conditioner throughout your hair. The amount you will use depends on your hair length and thickness. For natural hair, try Blended Beauty Quenching Conditioner, Jane Carter Solution Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner, Aloe 80 Daily Conditioner, or any of the Aubrey Organics Conditioners. For distressed hair, try Blended BeautyHerbal Reconditioner. If your hair is very thick or very curly, you may use a palm full of conditioner or more.

Why use a Denman Brush?

I personally trust Denman brushes to detangle my hair or to help form and define my curls when styling my hair (truly excellent).
Denman brushes are the most trusted and most use brushes in the professional hair styling business.

I recommend the following Classic Denman Brush:

The D3 medium styling brush has 7 rows of nylon bristles, and is recommended for medium to longer hair. It is Denman’s most popular styling brush, a must!
